Conscious Contracts Workshop

Conscious Contracts Workshop

We're living in a time of profound and rapid change, where new models such as B Corps, Social Enterprises, and the sharing economy are challenging entrenched, top-down, hierarchical models and systems. It's one thing to shift our consciousness, and quite another to change entrenched ways of getting things done.

The contracts we enter into create the "private law" that applies to our relationships. Most people see contracts as scary, difficult to understand documents that may lead to disagreements and liability, rather than what they can be: a summary of shared commitments, verbalized expectations, and a blueprint for the best possible outcome.

I'm excited to be partnering with J. Kim Wright in bringing her Conscious Contracts Workshop to Boulder on August 10-11, 2017. Lawyers will earn 14 CLE credits, but the workshop is designed for non-lawyers too.

Lawyers as Changemakers

Thanks to my friend Rachel Zurer, Editorial Director of the amazing and inspiring Conscious Company Magazine , I was recently introduced to the work of J. Kim Wright. Wright is the author of Lawyers as Peacemakers and Lawyers as Changemakers, both of which I dove right into after reading Wright's article, "Stop Being Scared of Your Legal Documents" in the January issue. Until reading Wright's work, I had no idea that there was a small but growing community of "integrative lawyers" who, like me, see so much unrealized potential in the law as an actual helping profession. I am not yet finished with the books, and I'm still "integrating" a lot of what I'm learning, but basically I've been practicing this kind of law without knowing that there are others out there like me. Reading these books about using the skills and talents I already have to create more peace and positive change during this frightening time of political insanity has been a kind of life boat for me. I hope you find your life boat, too - that tool in your toolbox that will help preserve our precious planet and bring about a more connected human consciousness.

When Choosing a Lawyer, Emotional Intelligence Counts

When Choosing a Lawyer, Emotional Intelligence Counts

Let's face it: any time you even think about hiring a lawyer, you're dealing with some scary stuff. Even if it's good stuff, like negotiating a licensing agreement with the purchaser of your invention, or deciding what corporate form will work best for the business you've long dreamed of launching, the decisions you make today may have serious long-term implications.

When your legal matters arise out of circumstances that you did not choose, the experience can be even scarier.

Mediation and Charlie Hebdo's Existential Crisis

Mediation and Charlie Hebdo's Existential Crisis

It's a shame that the New York Times can write an in-depth expose of the problems at Charlie Hebdo, with no mention of a potential solution. Mediation cannot achieve its potential to resolve disputes more peacefully, and enable collaboration among people with diverse skills and perspectives, until people like the writers at the Times and the visionaries at Charlie Hebdo understand what mediators do and how they can help.
